Ocean Beach Oktoberfest
This year, OB Oktoberfest was a TWO DAY Event!
Friday started with a Blondeathon Event hosted by 91X, which gave free admission from 5-6:31pm to anyone wearing a blonde wig or with braided pigtails. Also, the Charger Girls joined the fun to seel their calendar which supports the Wounded Warrior Fund. In addition to the preliminary rounds of the Stein Holding, Sausage Eating and Sausage Toss qualifying rounds, the final round of the Beer Garden Band Slam was held.
In its innaugural year, the Beer Garden Band Slam was a contest of local tribute bands. For two weekends leading up to OB Oktoberfest, bands competed for a place in the finals at one of the participating bars (Winstons in Ocean Beach and 710 Beach Club in Pacific Beach). The crowds gathered to support the musicians and in the end Back 2 Black - an AC/DC Tribute Band - won top prpize of $2,500 cash! This will surely be a success again next year.
Saturday kicked off with the OB Brew Cup. For anyone that had pre-ordered their $15 ticket, the $3 general admission fee was waived. A $15 Brew Cup ticket got you six - 5oz. tasters of premium and seasonal beers that were poured throughout most of the rest of the day. The finals for the Stein Holding, Sausage Eating and Sausage Toss were held and many people went home happy with prizes. Music played throughout the day on Saturday at the all ages area on the lawn at Veterans Plaza. In addition to the Oompah Music at this stage, there were sausage vendors and all sorts of wonderful crafts vendors. As always, the $1 shuttle ran between the 710 Beach Club on Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach and the foot of Newport Ave.
What a great event! Thanks to the residents, merchants and visitors - it was a great day in Ocean Beach.
